Robert Plant’s Cruel Aerosmith Review, Gretta Van Fleet
Led Zeppelin has been compared to Aerosmith and Greta Van Fleet for years, but Robert Plant has strong feelings about both. The former Led Zeppelin leader compared his band to Greta Van Fleet and made a pun at Aerosmith.
Aerosmith with Greta Van Fleet: Robert Plant’s View
Greta Van Fleet is one of the most contentious rock bands due to their resemblance to Led Zeppelin. Classic rock purists say they’re duplicating the greats, while modern fans say nothing is genuinely unique. Robert Plant sees the resemblance, despite the debate.
Robert Plant mentioned Detroit in a 2018 interview with Ryan Fitzgerald of The Project. “They are Led Zeppelin I,” Plant said, referring to the 1969 album. Plant called Greta Van Fleet member Josh Kiszka a “beautiful little singer,” adding, “I hate him.” and smiling sarcastically. He used someone I know’s voice. How will you proceed? At least he has some things, Plant said. He says he modeled his style after Aerosmith. Rolling his eyes and pretending to sleep, the former headed Zeppelin singer expressed his view on the band headed by Steven Tyler.
Former Frontman Comments on Legacy Bands
Interviews often ask about musical influence, but Greta Van Fleet appears to encounter this question more often owing to their aural and artistic resemblance to Led Zeppelin and, to Robert Plant’s dismay, Aerosmith. Greta says their influences include big bands, blues giants, and vintage rock. In his 2018 interview, Plant didn’t explain why he feigned to nap while mentioning Aerosmith, although a few explanations are obvious. He may be aware of his impact on Josh Kiszka’s singing, whether he did it intentionally or not.
Additionally, Plant may have strong ideas about “legacy bands” like Aerosmith. Despite Led Zeppelin’s reputation, Plant has avoided this category since the band never reunited after 1980. Plant told MOJO (via NME) in 2021 that “most musicians form a band, then they stay in the band until it’s over—20 years, 30 years, 50 years, whatever it is—and it starts to look sadly decrepit.” “It’s like people clutching a life raft or staying put.” On a late 2000s Led Zeppelin tour, Jimmy Page considered Steven Tyler as lead singer. Tyler declined, thinking it was the wrong life raft.
