The Rolling Stones with Irma Thomas at Jazz Fest

The Rolling Stones will perform at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for the first time tonight (May 2), and they are reportedly arranging unique performances. The Rolling Stones will perform “Time Is on My Side,” a 1964 ballad, with iconic New Orleans soul singer Irma Thomas, according to WWL Louisiana. “I rehearsed with them yesterday and it’s on,” New Orleans Soul Queen Thomas told WWL on May 2. I will be summoned midway through his set.” Kai Winding recorded “Time Is on My Side” the year before Thomas recorded it in April 1964. After hearing Thomas’ version, the Rolling Stones recorded theirs in June 1964. The Stones’ version reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1964, their first Top-10 success in the U.S.

Thomas stated her Stones practice was wonderful since Mick Jagger was kind. The singer had to relearn the song after a lengthy absence. That fits me.”The Rolling Stones last played “Time Is on My Side” in concert in March 1998 in Osaka, Japan, according to Setlist.fm.

Thomas skipped “Time Is on My Side” for years.
Thomas stopped performing “Time Is on My Side” live for years because she was offended that people assumed she was recreating a Rolling Stones song.“My problem was not the Rolling Stones, but the audience who didn’t realize I had performed it first and [thought] I was doing the Rolling Stones song,” she told Grammy.com in 2022. “I got tired of explaining that, so I stopped.” Thomas sang the song live again when Bonnie Raitt invited her to sing it at one of her gigs years later.

The Stones’ Jazz Fest Show Will Have Another Guest.
Other New Orleans acts appearing alongside The Stones at JazzFest include zydeco accordionist Dwayne Dopsie. On May 1, Dopsie uploaded a picture of him with Jagger, Ronnie Wood, and Stones backup vocalist Bernard Fowler on his social media accounts with the caption, “I just rehearsed with the [Rolling Stones,] who asked to have me be [a part of [their show tomorrow] at the New Orleans jazz festival.” He said, “This is a renowned rock and roll band I grew up listening to, and now to perform on stage with them adding my zydeco vibe to [their] songs is mind blowing and a true gift!!!! Working hard pays off!”
