Pete Townshend Responds to Kenney Jones’ Insult to ‘It’s Hard’

In a Mojo interview, Pete Townshend discussed The Who’s last album with John Entwistle, ‘It’s Hard. Townshend revealed why he disagreed with Kenney Jones’ song reviews: Kenney Jones stated, ‘You’ve stolen the greatest tunes for your solo record and left us with this dross.’ I won’t accept that. That was rude. But I probably needed time to write more custom tracks for the record.”

Jones was not alone in disliking the ‘It’s Hard’ CD. Roger Daltrey also opposed the album. Pete recounted Daltrey’s response and his side during the previous conversation: Roger told us, ‘I’m not consenting to this CD coming out. Just not good enough. But we were contracted and took most of the fucking money. We had to release it. It may have been more or too diversified. No idea. I recently listened to it and liked it. The Who needed a fucking psychotherapist.”

Roger Daltrey Only Liked One Song From ‘It’s Hard’. The Who vocalist initially disliked their ninth studio album. He even said the record should never have been published. The ‘It’s Hard’ album had just one song Daltrey liked singing. Roger named ‘Cry If You Want’ his favorite song from the album. He said the song should have been a single. The singer said:

“I think ‘Cry If You Want’ best expresses what the Who are feeling right now. I believe it should have been the single. That describes how it feels to be 38 and singing in the Who! ‘It’s Hard’ also drew mixed reactions from Who fans. Townshend appears unconflicted about releasing the album.
